Jewel Development Demolition
Several buildings including the 16
storey Oriana high rise building have been demolished to make way
for the new luxury Jewel development in Surfers Paradise on the Gold
Coast.
The Jewel Development is an example
of a large commercial demolition project
completed by Abyss Demolition. The complex demolition project
included asbestos removal, house
demolition, high rise demolition works and hazardous
material removal. Demolition works have been completed on the
site with construction works due to be commenced later in the year.
The existing buildings on the site included houses, the two storey
Silveretta apartment building, the three storey Paradise Sands
apartment building and the 16 storey Oriana Building.

Teams of Abyss Demolition licenced
asbestos removalists safely removed all asbestos products from the
buildings prior to demolition works commencing. The demolition
works were staged so that works to the Oriana Building were
completed concurrently with the demolition of the other structures
onsite.
The Oriana Building was 16 storeys
including the basement and plant levels and required full height
scaffolding to ensure the safety of the high rise demolition work
and to minimise the dust pollution. Once the building was
scaffolded, two small excavators were craned to the top level to
mechanically demolish the apartments from the top down. The project
was inspected and signed off by an engineer prior to and throughout
the works to ensure it was completed to the highest safety
standards at all times.
The project was completed without
incident in February 2015 and the 1.13ha site is ready for the
iconic development to begin. The site is the largest beachfront
urban development on the Australian Eastern coast. Plans for the
Jewel development include a 6-star luxury hotel, premium serviced
apartments, restaurants and cafes including beachfront dining, a
ballroom and meeting facilities and even a recording
